Citrus Meltaways

July 20, 2015 By Naomi Robinson | Bakers Royale 31 Comments

How fun and cheerful are these cookies? I’m loving the bright burst of color and lemony flavor.

I don’t usually go for color-dyed food unless it’s natural, but today we are doing it.

By the way, my aversion to eating bright, artificially colored food has nothing to do with any “healthy choices” or lack there of. I just always feel like I’m eating paint—it’s totally a mental thing.

So when I do color and it’s not naturally dyed, I try to keep it light in shading. Because that makes total sense right? Gah. To make it worse, I always make a “color exception” for macarons. Now those, I love them bright and deep in color!

I also usually don’t go for color-dyed food unless it’s natural, but I let things go in the summer. . because sometimes you just need that perfect yellow, blue or neon pink (my kids) that you can’t quite get from the natural stuff. and sometimes I just don’t want to spend $14 on natural food dye! 😛 love these meltaways!!

I feel the same way you do about the food coloring. I really have a hard time understanding the appeal of red velvet cake. I do make it sometimes, because friends request it. Like you, I feel less food coloring is desirable if you’re going to ingest it. I use only half the amount of food coloring called for, and I feel it is plenty bright.

With that being said, I think your citrus cookies look bright and fun for summer–and I bet the cookies would still be delicious not tinted.

I almost don’t want to eat these gorgeous cookies, I’d like to just stare at them because they are totally making my heart smile. But, now my tummy is jealous of my heart… so I guess I’m going to have to make a double batch. Continuously. One to eat while I’m staring and smiling at the other. And repeat. 🙂 I’m with you on not normally using food dye.. however, there is ALWAYS an exception and these are most definitely worth breaking All the rules!! Love these! Pinned!!

They are adorable Naomi and they sound so light and summery! I’m not a huge fan of food coloring either but I’ll take it in small doses, and with macarons it’s essential!
