Remember these vodka spike stuffed strawberries from last year? Fun, right?  I wanted to keep the fruit theme going this year. This time I skipped the alcohol but you can certainly keep it by soaking the apple portion. I don’t recommend soaking the watermelon as it would become too mushy for this fruit-on-a-stick idea.

No recipe. Just a fun idea I wanted to share for a red, white and blue 4th of July dessert. Enjoy!

A few notes:

  • To make these, I used watermelon, apples and blueberries.
  • To keep the apples from browning, lightly brush them with lime or lemon juice. I prefer limes for the flavor and that they seem less tart.
  • Cut watermelon and apple pieces to thickness of the cookie cutter, then place cookie cutter on top of slices and push straight down. Place one fruit inside of another and finish with a blueberry in the middle.
  • Push the straw through all three pieces of fruit to keep it everything in place. If you have trouble pushing a paper straw through the apple portion, use a plastic straw first to create a pathway and then replace with the paper straw. Popsicle sticks will work as well.

    How do you get such a delicate papery straw through the apple?

    Was the fruit stable or was it sort of hanging on by a thread on the stick?

      Hi Susan,

      The fruit is stable. You need to push the straw all the way through until it pierces the blueberry.

      The paper straw goes through just fine. If you have a some trouble with your paper straw, try it first with a hardy plastic straw.

    These are totally cute! If you soak your apples for a few minutes (I do about 10) in any lemon lime soda like sprite or 7 up they will not brown….and much less tart than lemon or lime juice!

    Are you using two different cookie cutters? And for the watermelon stars how are you getting rid of the access watermelon either on the outside or middle after using the cookie cutter

    How do you get the apple star shape to fit inside the watermelon? Same with the blueberry?

      Leah – You need to a star cookie setter with nesting sizes. I used Wilton’s, available at Michael’s craft store for less than $5. The center blueberry is cut out used the large round end of a pastry tip.
