Coffee Italian Ice

Get your spoons ready for the easiest, 3-ingredient ice cream—okay, so it’s not legit ice cream, it’s  Italian ice. But I promise you, it’s just as refreshing. And this Italian ice recipe couldn’t be easier!

Well, maybe a little from the sugar, but let’s not nit-pick, because any dessert recipe as easy as this one deserves a place in your recipe collection.

But for those of you who want to quibble over the sugar, try using some agave or honey, just make sure you use an ice cream machine. It needs the churning for the aeration to give it the distinctive Italian ice texture. Otherwise you’ll just end up with sorbet.

Coffee Italian ice

Yield: Makes 8 (1/2 cup servings)


Recipe adapted from McCormick

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon McCormick's Coffee Extract


  1. Place water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in coffee extract. Transfer mixture to refrigerator and let chill, about 2 hours. Once chilled pour into ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions.

    I just mad Italian ice for Food 52, but did mine a little differently. I wish I would have tried the ice cream maker method and I LOVE the coffee flavor. Looks awesome!

    Love the simplicity; I don’t have any coffee extract so I might have to play with some instant espresso. Like today!

    I am wondering if we can just us a cup of already made coffee and make it that way?? I do not drink coffee but the Hub loves it, he loves ices and he loves coffee ice cream so why not give it a shot??? Thanks for sharing!
